WISDOM OF SOLOMON
ABOUT THIS BOOK
Although this book is written as though Solomon was the author, it was probably written in the first century B.C. in Alexandria, Egypt, to encourage the Jews living there to be faithful to God. Some had abandoned the Jewish faith and adopted Greek religions, and the author wanted to show the Jews that the teachings and wisdom found in the Scriptures were better than those of Greek religion and philosophy. To do this, the author also had to deal with the old problem of why evil people are often successful, while good people are suffering. The author states that God will bring about justice when he judges all people after death. The wicked will be punished, but those who were faithful to God will live with him forever:
The Lord Most High
takes care of his people;
he will reward them,
and they will live forever.
