speech: Heb. words
2 but after some of them moved from the east
m 11.2 from the east: Or “to the east.”
and settled in Babylonia,
n 11.2 Babylonia: See the note at 10.6-20.
It happened, as they traveled east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they lived there. And it came to pass, as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. 2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
from...: or, eastward
3-4 they said:
Let's build a city with a tower that reaches to the sky! We'll use hard bricks and tar instead of stone and mortar. We'll become famous, and we won't be scattered all over the world.
They said one to another, “Come, let’s make brick, and burn them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they used tar for mortar. And they said one to another, Come, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar. 3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and burn them throughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for morter.
they said...: Heb. a man said to his neighbour
burn...: Heb. burn them to a burning
5 But when the Lord came down to look at the city and the tower,
Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men built.
And Jehovah came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded.
6 he said:
These people are working together because they all speak the same language. This is just the beginning. Soon they will be able to do anything they want.
Yahweh said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is what they begin to do. Now nothing will be withheld from them, which they intend to do. And Jehovah said, Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language; and this is what they begin to do: and now nothing will be withholden from them, which they purpose to do. 6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
7 Come on! Let's go down and confuse them by making them speak different languages—then they won't be able to understand each other. Come, let’s go down, and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” Come, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. 7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.
8-9 So the people had to stop building the city, because the Lord confused their language and scattered them all over the earth. That's how the city of Babel
o 11.8,9 Babel: In Hebrew “Babel” sounds like “confused.”
got its name.
So Yahweh scattered them abroad from there on the surface of all the earth. They stopped building the city. So Jehovah scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off building the city. 8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
