Jesus and Nicodemus
3
1 There was a man named Nicodemus who was a Pharisee and a Jewish leader.
3 Chapter recording
List of all recordings of KJV
1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews:
2 One night he went to Jesus and said, “Sir, we know that God has sent you to teach us. You could not work these miracles, unless God were with you.” 2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him.
3 Jesus replied, “I tell you for certain that you must be born from above
k 3.3 from above: Or “in a new way.” The same Greek word is used in verses 7,31.
before you can see God's kingdom!”
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
again: or, from above
4 Nicodemus asked, “How can a grown man ever be born a second time?”
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered:
I tell you for certain that before you can get into God's kingdom, you must be born not only by water, but by the Spirit.
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 Humans give life to their children. Yet only God's Spirit can change you into a child of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Don't be surprised when I say that you must be born from above. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
again: or, from above
8 Only God's Spirit gives new life. The Spirit is like the wind that blows wherever it wants to. You can hear the wind, but you don't know where it comes from or where it is going. 8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
9 “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked.
9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
10 Jesus replied:
How can you be a teacher of Israel and not know these things?
10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things?
11 I tell you for certain that we know what we are talking about because we have seen it ourselves. But none of you will accept what we say. 11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness.
12 If you don't believe when I talk to you about things on earth, how can you possibly believe if I talk to you about things in heaven?
3.12 Ws 9.16
12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?
13 No one has gone up to heaven except the Son of Man, who came down from there.
3.13 Ba 3.29.
13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
14 And the Son of Man must be lifted up, just as that metal snake was lifted up by Moses in the desert.
l 3.14 just as that metal snake was lifted up by Moses in the desert: When the Lord punished the people of Israel by sending snakes to bite them, he told Moses to hold a metal snake up on a pole. Everyone who looked at the snake was cured of the snake bites (see Numbers 21.4-9).
3.14 Nu 21.9; Ws 16.5
14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:
15 Then everyone who has faith in the Son of Man will have eternal life. 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.
16 God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die.
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 God did not send his Son into the world to condemn its people. He sent him to save them! 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18 No one who has faith in God's Son will be condemned. But everyone who doesn't have faith in him has already been condemned for not having faith in God's only Son. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 The light has come into the world, and people who do evil things are judged guilty because they love the dark more than the light.
19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
20 People who do evil hate the light and won't come to the light, because it clearly shows what they have done. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
reproved: or, discovered
21 But everyone who lives by the truth will come to the light, because they want others to know that God is really the one doing what they do. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Jesus and John the Baptist
22 Later, Jesus and his disciples went to Judea, where he stayed with them for a while and was baptizing people.
22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.
23-24 John had not yet been put in jail. He was at Aenon near Salim, where there was a lot of water, and people were coming there for John to baptize them.
3.23,24 Mt 14.3,4; Mk 6.17,18; Lk 3.19,20.
23 And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.
25 John's followers got into an argument with a Jewish man
m 3.25 a Jewish man: Some manuscripts have “some Jewish men.”
about a ceremony of washing.
n 3.25 about a ceremony of washing: The Jewish people had many rules about washing themselves and their dishes, in order to make themselves fit to worship God.
25 Then there arose a question between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying.
26 They went to John and said, “Rabbi, you spoke about a man when you were with him east of the Jordan. He is now baptizing people, and everyone is going to him.” 26 And they came unto John, and said unto him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond Jordan, to whom thou barest witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him.
27 John replied:
No one can do anything unless God in heaven allows it.
27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it be given him from heaven.
receive: or, take unto himself
28 You surely remember how I told you that I am not the Messiah. I am only the one sent ahead of him.
3.28 Jn 1.19
28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but that I am sent before him.
29 At a wedding the groom is the one who gets married. The best man is glad just to be there and to hear the groom's voice. That's why I am so glad.
29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom's voice: this my joy therefore is fulfilled.
30 Jesus must become more important, while I become less important. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.
The One Who Comes from Heaven
31 God's Son comes from heaven and is above all others. Everyone who comes from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks about earthly things. The one who comes from heaven is above all others.
31 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all.
32 He speaks about what he has seen and heard, and yet no one believes him. 32 And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony.
33 But everyone who does believe him has shown that God is truthful. 33 He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.
34 The Son was sent to speak God's message, and he has been given the full power of God's Spirit. 34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.
35 The Father loves the Son and has given him everything.
3.35 Mt 11.27; Lk 10.22.
35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.
36 Everyone who has faith in the Son has eternal life. But no one who rejects him will ever share in that life, and God will be angry with them forever. 36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
