The Temple Will Be Destroyed
(Matthew 24.1,2; Luke 21.5,6)
13
1 As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of his disciples said to him, “Teacher, look at these beautiful stones and wonderful buildings!”

1 And as he went out of the temple, one of his disciples saith unto him, Master, see what manner of stones and what buildings are here!
2 Jesus replied, “Do you see these huge buildings? They will certainly be torn down! Not one stone will be left in place.”
2 And Jesus answering said unto him, Seest thou these great buildings? there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.
Warning about Trouble
(Matthew 24.3-14; Luke 21.7-19)
3 Later, as Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives across from the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew came to him in private.
3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives over against the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew asked him privately,
4 They asked, “When will these things happen? What will be the sign that they are about to take place?” 4 Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign when all these things shall be fulfilled?
5 Jesus answered:
Watch out and don't let anyone fool you!
5 And Jesus answering them began to say, Take heed lest any man deceive you:
6 Many will come and claim to be me. They will use my name and fool many people. 6 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
7 When you hear about wars and threats of wars, don't be afraid. These things will have to happen first, but that isn't the end.
7 And when ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars, be ye not troubled: for such things must needs be; but the end shall not be yet.
8 Nations and kingdoms will go to war against each other. There will be earthquakes in many places, and people will starve to death. But this is just the beginning of troubles. 8 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be earthquakes in divers places, and there shall be famines and troubles: these are the beginnings of sorrows.
sorrows: the word in the original importeth the pains of a woman in travail
9 Be on your guard! You will be taken to courts and beaten with whips in their meeting places. And because of me, you will have to stand before rulers and kings to tell about your faith.
13.9-11 Mt 10.17-20; Lk 12.11,12.
9 But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them.
10 But before the end comes, the good news must be preached to all nations. 10 And the gospel must first be published among all nations.
11 When you are arrested, don't worry about what you will say. You will be given the right words when the time comes. But you will not really be the ones speaking. Your words will come from the Holy Spirit.
11 But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.
12 Brothers and sisters will betray each other and have each other put to death. Parents will betray their own children, and children will turn against their parents and have them killed.
12 Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death.
13 Everyone will hate you because of me. But if you keep on being faithful right to the end, you will be saved.
13.13 Mt 10.22.
13 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
The Horrible Thing
(Matthew 24.15-21; Luke 21.20-24)
14 Someday you will see that “Horrible Thing” where it should not be.
c 13.14 where it should not be: Probably the holy place in the temple.
Everyone who reads this must try to understand! If you are living in Judea at that time, run to the mountains.
13.14 Dn 9.27; 11.31; 12.11; 1Macc 1.54; 6.7.
14 But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains:
15 If you are on the roof
d 13.15 roof: See the note at 2.4.
of your house, don't go inside to get anything.
13.15,16 Lk 17.31.
15 And let him that is on the housetop not go down into the house, neither enter therein, to take any thing out of his house:
16 If you are out in the field, don't go back for your coat. 16 And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to take up his garment.
17 It will be an awful time for women who are expecting babies or nursing young children. 17 But woe to them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days!
18 Pray that it won't happen in winter.
e 13.18 in winter: In Palestine the winters are cold and rainy and make travel difficult.
18 And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter.
19 This will be the worst time of suffering since God created the world, and nothing this terrible will ever happen again.
13.19 Dn 12.1; Rev 7.14.
19 For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be.
20 If the Lord doesn't make the time shorter, no one will be left alive. But because of his chosen and special ones, he will make the time shorter. 20 And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect's sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days.
21 If someone should say, “Here is the Messiah!” or “There he is!” don't believe it.
21 And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not:
22 False messiahs and false prophets will come and work miracles and signs. They will even try to fool God's chosen ones. 22 For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.
23 But be on your guard! That's why I am telling you these things now. 23 But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things.
When the Son of Man Appears
(Matthew 24.29-31; Luke 21.25-28)
24 In those days, right after that time of suffering,
13.24 a Is 13.10; Jl 2.10

“The sun will become dark,
and the moon
will no longer shine.
24 But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light,
25 The stars will fall,
13.25 a Is 34.4; Rev 6.13; b Jl 2.10.
and the powers in the sky
f 13.25 the powers in the sky: In ancient times people thought that the stars were spiritual powers.
will be shaken.”
25 And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken.

26 Then the Son of Man will be seen coming in the clouds with great power and glory.
13.26 Dn 7.13; Rev 1.7.
26 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.
27 He will send his angels to gather his chosen ones from all over the earth. 27 And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.
A Lesson from a Fig Tree
(Matthew 24.32-35; Luke 21.29-33)
28 Learn a lesson from a fig tree. When its branches sprout and start putting out leaves, you know summer is near.
28 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When her branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is near:
29 So when you see all these things happening, you will know that the time has almost come.
g 13.29 the time has almost come: Or “he (that is, the Son of Man) will soon be here.”
29 So ye in like manner, when ye shall see these things come to pass, know that it is nigh, even at the doors.
30 You can be sure that some of the people of this generation will still be alive when all this happens. 30 Verily I say unto you, that this generation shall not pass, till all these things be done.
31 The sky and the earth will not last forever, but my words will. 31 Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.
No One Knows the Day or Time
(Matthew 24.36-44)
32 No one knows the day or the time. The angels in heaven don't know, and the Son himself doesn't know. Only the Father knows.
13.32 Mt 24.36.
32 But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven, neither the Son, but the Father.
33 So watch out and be ready! You don't know when the time will come. 33 Take ye heed, watch and pray: for ye know not when the time is.
34 It is like what happens when a man goes away for a while and places his servants in charge of everything. He tells each of them what to do, and he orders the guard to keep alert.
13.34 Lk 12.36
34 For the Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and commanded the porter to watch.
35 So be alert! You don't know when the master of the house will come back. It could be in the evening or at midnight or before dawn or in the morning. 35 Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh, at even, or at midnight, or at the cockcrowing, or in the morning:
36 But if he comes suddenly, don't let him find you asleep. 36 Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping.
37 I tell everyone just what I have told you. Be alert! 37 And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch.
