1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 The earth was barren,
with no form of life;
b 1.1,2 In ... life: Or “When God began to create the heavens and the earth, the earth was barren with no form of life.”
it was under a roaring ocean
covered with darkness.
But the Spirit of God
c 1.2 the Spirit of God: Or “a mighty wind.”
was moving over the water.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
The First Day
3 God said, “I command light to shine!” And light started shining.
1.3 2Macc 7.28; 2Co 4.6.
3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4 God looked at the light and saw that it was good. He separated light from darkness 4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
the light from...: Heb. between the light and between the darkness
5 and named the light “Day” and the darkness “Night.” Evening came and then morning—that was the first day.
d 1.5 the first day: A day was measured from evening to evening.
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
And the evening...: Heb. And the evening was, and the morning was etc.
The Second Day
6 God said, “I command a dome to separate the water above it from the water below it.”
1.6-8 2P 3.5.
6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
firmament: Heb. expansion
7 And that's what happened. God made the dome 7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.
8 and named it “Sky.” Evening came and then morning—that was the second day. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
And the evening...: Heb. And the evening was, and the morning was etc.
The Third Day
9 God said, “I command the water under the sky to come together in one place, so there will be dry ground.” And that's what happened.
9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.
10 God named the dry ground “Land,” and he named the water “Ocean.” God looked at what he had done and saw that it was good. 10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.
11 God said, “I command the earth to produce all kinds of plants, including fruit trees and grain.” And that's what happened.
11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.
grass: Heb. tender grass
12 The earth produced all kinds of vegetation. God looked at what he had done, and it was good. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
13 Evening came and then morning—that was the third day. 13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.
And the evening...: Heb. And the evening was, and the morning was etc.
The Fourth Day
14 God said, “I command lights to appear in the sky and to separate day from night and to show the time for seasons, special days, and years.
14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:
the day...: Heb. between the day and between the night
15 I command them to shine on the earth.” And that's what happened. 15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.
16 God made two powerful lights, the brighter one to rule the day and the other
e 1.16 the brighter ... the other: The sun and the moon. But they are not called by their names, because in Old Testament times some people worshiped the sun and the moon as though they were gods.
to rule the night. He also made the stars.
16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.
to rule the day...: Heb. for the rule of the day, etc.
17 Then God put these lights in the sky to shine on the earth, 17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,
18 to rule day and night, and to separate light from darkness. God looked at what he had done, and it was good. 18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
19 Evening came and then morning—that was the fourth day. 19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
And the evening...: Heb. And the evening was, and the morning was etc.
The Fifth Day
20 God said, “I command the ocean to be full of living creatures, and I command birds to fly above the earth.”
20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.
moving: or, creeping
creature: Heb. soul
fowl...: Heb. let fowl fly
open...: Heb. face of the firmament of heaven
21 So God made the giant sea monsters and all the living creatures that swim in the ocean. He also made every kind of bird. God looked at what he had done, and it was good. 21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
22 Then he gave the living creatures his blessing—he told the ocean creatures to live everywhere in the ocean and the birds to live everywhere on earth. 22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.
23 Evening came and then morning—that was the fifth day. 23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.
And the evening...: Heb. And the evening was, and the morning was etc.
The Sixth Day
24 God said, “I command the earth to give life to all kinds of tame animals, wild animals, and reptiles.” And that's what happened.
24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.
25 God made every one of them. Then he looked at what he had done, and it was good. 25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.
26 God said, “Now we will make humans, and they will be like us. We will let them rule the fish, the birds, and all other living creatures.”
1.26 Ws 2.23; Si 17.3
26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
27 So God created humans to be like himself; he made men and women.
1.27,28 Gn 5.1,2.
1.27 Mt 19.4; Mk 10.6.
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
28 God gave them his blessing and said:
Have a lot of children! Fill the earth with people and bring it under your control. Rule over the fish in the ocean, the birds in the sky, and every animal on the earth.
28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.
moveth: Heb. creepeth
29 I have provided all kinds of fruit and grain for you to eat.
29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.
bearing...: Heb. seeding seed
yielding...: Heb. seeding seed
30 And I have given the green plants as food for everything else that breathes. These will be food for animals, both wild and tame, and for birds. 30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.
life: Heb. a living soul
31 God looked at what he had done. All of it was very good! Evening came and then morning—that was the sixth day.
31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
And the evening...: Heb. And the evening was, and the morning was etc.
