1 Hear my prayer, O LORD, and let my cry come unto thee.
2 Don't hide from me
in my time of trouble.
Pay attention to my prayer
and quickly give an answer.
2 Hide not thy face from me in the day when I am in trouble; incline thine ear unto me: in the day when I call answer me speedily.
3 My days disappear like smoke,
and my bones are burning
as though in a furnace.
3 For my days are consumed like smoke, and my bones are burned as an hearth. like...: or, (as some read) into smoke
4 I am wasting away like grass,
and my appetite is gone.
4 My heart is smitten, and withered like grass; so that I forget to eat my bread.
5 My groaning never stops,
and my bones can be seen
through my skin.
5 By reason of the voice of my groaning my bones cleave to my skin. skin: or, flesh
6 I am like a lonely owl
in the desert
6 I am like a pelican of the wilderness: I am like an owl of the desert.
7 or a restless sparrow
alone on a roof.
7 I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the house top.
8 My enemies insult me all day,
and they use my name
for a curse word.
8 Mine enemies reproach me all the day; and they that are mad against me are sworn against me.
9 Instead of food,
I have ashes to eat
and tears to drink,
9 For I have eaten ashes like bread, and mingled my drink with weeping,
10 because you are furious
and have thrown me aside.
10 Because of thine indignation and thy wrath: for thou hast lifted me up, and cast me down.
11 My life fades like a shadow
at the end of day
and withers like grass.
11 My days are like a shadow that declineth; and I am withered like grass.
12 Our Lord, you are King forever
and will always be famous.
12 But thou, O LORD, shalt endure for ever; and thy remembrance unto all generations.
13 You will show pity to Zion
because the time has come.
13 Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come.
14 We, your servants,
love each stone in the city,
and we are sad to see them
lying in the dirt.
14 For thy servants take pleasure in her stones, and favour the dust thereof.
15 Our Lord, the nations
will honor you,
and all kings on earth
will praise your glory.
15 So the heathen shall fear the name of the LORD, and all the kings of the earth thy glory.
16 You will rebuild
the city of Zion.
Your glory will be seen,
16 When the LORD shall build up Zion, he shall appear in his glory.
17 and the prayers of the homeless
will be answered.
17 He will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their prayer.
18 Future generations must also
praise the Lord,
so write this for them:
18 This shall be written for the generation to come: and the people which shall be created shall praise the LORD.
19 “From his holy temple,
the Lord looked down
at the earth.
19 For he hath looked down from the height of his sanctuary; from heaven did the LORD behold the earth;
20 He listened to the groans
of prisoners,
and he rescued everyone
who was doomed to die.”
20 To hear the groaning of the prisoner; to loose those that are appointed to death; those...: Heb. the children of death
21 All Jerusalem should praise
you, our Lord,
21 To declare the name of the LORD in Zion, and his praise in Jerusalem;
22 when people from every nation
meet to worship you.
22 When the people are gathered together, and the kingdoms, to serve the LORD.
23 I should still be strong,
but you, Lord, have made
an old person of me.
23 He weakened my strength in the way; he shortened my days. weakened: Heb. afflicted
24 You will live forever!
Years mean nothing to you.
Don't cut my life in half!
24 I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days: thy years are throughout all generations.
25 In the beginning, Lord,
you laid the earth's foundation
and created the heavens.
25 Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands.
26 They will all disappear
and wear out like clothes.
You change them,
as you would a coat,
but you last forever.
26 They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: endure: Heb. stand
27 You are always the same.
Years cannot change you.
27 But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.
28 Every generation of those
who serve you
will live in your presence.
28 The children of thy servants shall continue, and their seed shall be established before thee.
