1 They put the sacred chest inside the tent that David had set up for it, then they offered sacrifices to please the Lord
l 16.1 sacrifices to please the Lord: These sacrifices have traditionally been called “whole burnt offerings” because the whole animal was burned on the altar. A main purpose of such sacrifices was to please the Lord with the smell of the sacrifice, and so in the CEV they are often called “sacrifices to please the Lord.”
and sacrifices to ask his blessing.
m 16.1 sacrifices to ask his blessing: These sacrifices have traditionally been called “peace offerings” or “offerings of well-being.” A main purpose was to ask for the Lord's blessing, and so in the CEV they are sometimes called “sacrifices to ask the Lord's blessing.”

1 So they brought the ark of God, and set it in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it: and they offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings before God.
2 After David had finished, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord 2 And when David had made an end of offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD.
3 and gave every person in the crowd a small loaf of bread, some meat, and a handful of raisins. 3 And he dealt to every one of Israel, both man and woman, to every one a loaf of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine.
4 David appointed some of the Levites to serve at the sacred chest; they were to play music and sing praises to the Lord God of Israel.
4 And he appointed certain of the Levites to minister before the ark of the LORD, and to record, and to thank and praise the LORD God of Israel:
5 Asaph was their leader, and Zechariah was his assistant. Jeiel, Shemiramoth, Jehiel, Mattithiah, Eliab, Benaiah, Obed-Edom, and another man named Jeiel were appointed to play small harps and stringed instruments. Asaph himself played the cymbals, 5 Asaph the chief, and next to him Zechariah, Jeiel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Mattithiah, and Eliab, and Benaiah, and Obededom: and Jeiel with psalteries and with harps; but Asaph made a sound with cymbals;
with psalteries...: Heb. with instruments of psalteries and harps
6 and the two priests Benaiah and Jahaziel were to blow trumpets every day in front of the sacred chest. 6 Benaiah also and Jahaziel the priests with trumpets continually before the ark of the covenant of God.
David's Song of Praise
(Psalms 105.1-15; 96.1-13; 106.1,47,48)
7 That same day, David instructed Asaph and his relatives for the first time to sing these praises to the Lord:
7 Then on that day David delivered first this psalm to thank the LORD into the hand of Asaph and his brethren.

8 Praise the Lord
and pray in his name!
Tell everyone
what he has done.
8 Give thanks unto the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people.
9 Sing praises to the Lord!
Tell about his miracles.
9 Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works.
10 Celebrate and worship
his holy name
with all your heart.
10 Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD.

11 Trust the Lord
and his mighty power.
Worship him always.
11 Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually.
12 Remember his miracles
and all his wonders
and his fair decisions.
12 Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth;
13 You belong to the family
of Israel, his servant;
you are his chosen ones,
the descendants of Jacob.
13 O ye seed of Israel his servant, ye children of Jacob, his chosen ones.

14 The Lord is our God,
bringing justice
everywhere on earth.
14 He is the LORD our God; his judgments are in all the earth.
15 We must never forget
his agreement and his promises,
not in thousands of years.
15 Be ye mindful always of his covenant; the word which he commanded to a thousand generations;
* 16 God made an eternal promise
16.16-18 a Gn 12.7; b Gn 26.3; c Gn 28.13.
16 Even of the covenant which he made with Abraham, and of his oath unto Isaac;
17 to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
17 And hath confirmed the same to Jacob for a law, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant,
18 when he said, “I'll give you
the land of Canaan.”
18 Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance;
the lot: Heb. the cord

19 At the time there were
only a few of us,
and we were homeless.
19 When ye were but few, even a few, and strangers in it.
few, even: Heb. men of number, etc
20 We wandered from nation
to nation,
from one country
to another.
20 And when they went from nation to nation, and from one kingdom to another people;
21 God did not let anyone
16.21,22 Gn 20.3-7.
mistreat our people.
Instead he protected us
by punishing rulers
21 He suffered no man to do them wrong: yea, he reproved kings for their sakes,
22 and telling them,
“Don't touch my chosen leaders
or harm my prophets!”
22 Saying, Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm.

23 Everyone on this earth,
sing praises to the Lord.
Day after day announce,
“The Lord has saved us!”
23 Sing unto the LORD, all the earth; shew forth from day to day his salvation.
24 Tell every nation on earth,
“The Lord is wonderful
and does marvelous things!
24 Declare his glory among the heathen; his marvellous works among all nations.
25 The Lord is great and deserves
our greatest praise!
He is the only God
worthy of our worship.
25 For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised: he also is to be feared above all gods.
26 Other nations worship idols,
but the Lord created
the heavens.
26 For all the gods of the people are idols: but the LORD made the heavens.
27 Give honor and praise
to the Lord,
whose power and beauty
fill his holy temple.”
27 Glory and honour are in his presence; strength and gladness are in his place.

28 Tell everyone of every nation,
“Praise the glorious power
of the Lord.
28 Give unto the LORD, ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and strength.
29 He is wonderful! Praise him
and bring an offering
into his temple.
Worship the Lord,
majestic and holy.
29 Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
30 Everyone on earth, now tremble!”

The world stands firm,
never to be shaken.
30 Fear before him, all the earth: the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved.

31 Tell the heavens and the earth
to be glad and celebrate!
And announce to the nations,
“The Lord is King!”
31 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice: and let men say among the nations, The LORD reigneth.
32 Command the ocean to roar
with all of its creatures
and the fields to rejoice
with all of their crops.
32 Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof: let the fields rejoice, and all that is therein.
33 Then every tree in the forest
will sing joyful songs
to the Lord.
He is coming to judge
all people on earth.
33 Then shall the trees of the wood sing out at the presence of the LORD, because he cometh to judge the earth.

34 Praise the Lord
16.34 2Ch 5.11
because he is good to us,
and his love never fails.
34 O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good; for his mercy endureth for ever.
35 Say to him, “Save us, Lord God!
Bring us back
from among the nations.
Let us celebrate and shout
in praise of your holy name.
35 And say ye, Save us, O God of our salvation, and gather us together, and deliver us from the heathen, that we may give thanks to thy holy name, and glory in thy praise.
36 Lord God of Israel,
you deserve to be praised
forever and ever.”

After David finished, the people shouted, “Amen! Praise the Lord!”
36 Blessed be the LORD God of Israel for ever and ever. And all the people said, Amen, and praised the LORD.
David Appoints Worship Leaders at Jerusalem and Gibeon
37 David chose Asaph and the Levites in his clan to be in charge of the daily worship at the place where the sacred chest was kept.
37 So he left there before the ark of the covenant of the LORD Asaph and his brethren, to minister before the ark continually, as every day's work required:
38 Obed-Edom and sixty-eight of his relatives were their assistants, and Hosah and Obed-Edom the son of Jeduthun were the guards. 38 And Obededom with their brethren, threescore and eight; Obededom also the son of Jeduthun and Hosah to be porters:
39 David also chose Zadok the priest and his relatives who were priests to serve at the Lord's sacred tent at Gibeon.
39 And Zadok the priest, and his brethren the priests, before the tabernacle of the LORD in the high place that was at Gibeon,
40 They were to offer sacrifices on the altar every morning and evening, just as the Lord had commanded in the Law he gave Israel. 40 To offer burnt offerings unto the LORD upon the altar of the burnt offering continually morning and evening, and to do according to all that is written in the law of the LORD, which he commanded Israel;
morning...: Heb. in the morning, and in the evening
41 Heman and Jeduthun were their assistants, as well as the other men who had been chosen to praise the Lord for his never-ending love. 41 And with them Heman and Jeduthun, and the rest that were chosen, who were expressed by name, to give thanks to the LORD, because his mercy endureth for ever;
42 Heman and Jeduthun were also responsible for blowing the trumpets, and for playing the cymbals and other instruments during worship at the tent. The Levites in Jeduthun's clan were the guards at Gibeon. 42 And with them Heman and Jeduthun with trumpets and cymbals for those that should make a sound, and with musical instruments of God. And the sons of Jeduthun were porters.
porters: Heb. for the gate
43 After that, everyone went home, and David went home to his family.
16.43 2S 6.19
43 And all the people departed every man to his house: and David returned to bless his house.
